Every label measures differently, and small breeds have narrow, deep chests — which is why standard charts so often mislead. Here is how to measure your dog properly.

How to measure
Neck. Measure where the collar normally sits — below the head, at the widest part of the neck. Two fingers should fit between the tape and the coat.
Chest. Measure at the widest point, just behind the front legs. This is the number that matters most when choosing a harness.
Back length. From the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Needed for clothing and beds.
Weight. Useful when a maker sizes by weight.
A few things that often get missed
Measure over the coat, not the skin — especially if your dog has just been clipped. A clip can take several centimetres off, so measure when the coat is at medium length.
If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one. Most harnesses and collars can be taken in; they cannot be let out.
Do not buy a growing puppy a size “to grow into” — an oversized harness slips and chafes. Better the smaller size now and another in six months.
